The Truth About Holodomor

I found myself on a website this morning called Holodomor Truth and it was a very interesting read. I tend to find these things very intriguing and I seem to gravitate toward investigating and learning about things like this.

Anyway, this website begins with the question:

What is Golodomor?

I had no idea…so I read on.

‘Golodomor’ means mass hunger or great hunger and it refers to the Soviet famine that occurred in 1932 and 1933 that caused the deaths of about 6-8 million peasants.

This famine affected most major grain-producing agricultural areas in the Soviet Union when the Communist governments seized grains from the peasants and exported most of their agricultural output to the west in order to fuel and feed the rapid industrialization that was occurring under Joseph Stalin.

Scholars and politicians agree that this famine was not an attempt to destroy the Ukraine but instead was simply an economic policy of the communist governments.

Viktor Yuschenko assumed power over Ukraine in 2004. Since this time his approval rating has been falling sharply. To try to maintain control and reduce tension, Yuschenko has taken steps to try to unite the Ukranian nation against Russia. One way he is trying to accomplish this is by politicizing the issue of ‘golodomor’ and by attracting as much attention as possible. He has changed the word ‘golodomor’ into ‘holodomor’ to try to make it look and sound like ‘holocaust.’ The goal is to connect this as a genocide in people’s minds.
