Wheelchair Lifts

I see more and more wheelchair lifts attached to vehicles and I am always gratified to see these neat contraptions enabling disabled people to have independence and many of the freedoms that a lot of us take for granted.

A vehicle wheelchair lift is used to make transporting a mobility vehicle, like a wheelchair or mobility scooter, easier. There are a few different kinds, including internal vehicle wheelchair lifts and external vehicle wheelchair lifts.

External vehicle wheelchair lifts attach to the hitch of a vehicle and can be installed and removed quickly. They typically have a platform that lowers to the ground and thus allows a scooter to be driven onto it and then raises off the ground.

In addition, there are internal vehicle wheelchair lifts are installed inside of a vehicle. There are two kinds of these internal lifts:

  1. Operates like a crane to lift the wheelchair off of the ground.
  2. Another uses a platform similar to the external lift.

The internal lifts that use platforms take up quite a bit of space inside a vehicle but its worth it because the crane ones work very well for storing a wheelchair in the trunk of a car.

Keep this information in mind if you or someone you know could use something like this to enable more independence!
