Movie Rating System
R Rated movies are not supposed to admit anyone under the age of 17. Approximately 12 % of 10-14 year olds regularly see R rated movies, however.
Researchers have recently concluded that violence in the media is linked to violence and aggression in children. Nothing really surprising here, right? Garbage in – garbage out is an old truism.
Perhaps it is time to consider revising the current movie rating system. It has been in place for 40 years and was instituted at a time when movies were only available in theaters. Nowadays, movies are easily viewable almost everywhere and anywhere.
Ratings need to be more prominently placed on movies…wherever they are viewed. The warning messages need to be crystal clear to parents as well. And parents need to be encouraged to strictly adhere to the warnings and to monitor media viewing.
