In Praise of "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons"

Yes…I’ve definitely got schooling on my mind these days!

Does anyone else cringe when they think about teaching a child to read? For years I have dreaded the schoolyears when I had a child ready to be taught to read. I’m not sure why…but the process of teaching a child to read is one of my more “unfavorite” aspects of homeschooling.

Last year was Ruthie’s turn to learn to read. And…as per our typical routine…by about November we were seriously struggling and both of us were beginning to look for ANY excuse not to “do school.” Not good!

I decided to do some looking around and almost immediately I found a lot of homeschool “talk” about the book “Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.” I decided I really had nothing to lose, so ordered it.

It’s designed to be used by a parent and is for children ages 4-6. The lessons are short (approximately 20 minutes each) and there is even a script for you to follow to make sure that everything is presented in the most effective way for successful learning.

Their approach worked for us and we were able to turn around a negative learning experience into a positive experience for Ruthie. She’s now reading at a 2nd grade reading level at 7 years old and is ready to begin 2nd grade this year.

4 year old Abby is raring to go…so we are going to crack this book together this year and I have no dread about it whatsoever!
