How is a Pearl Formed?
I adore Pearls. About 20 years ago my dad gave me a pearl necklace and it is still one of my favorite pieces of jewelry. Pearls are elegant yet simple and I just love them.
I had always heard the story of a grain of sand becoming a pearl. Did you know that this is a myth? A pearl is not formed from a single grain of sand.
Now that I know how a pearl isn’t formed, I need to know how it is formed! Well…actually, a pearl is formed when a tiny organism drills through the shell of an oyster. The oyster defends itself against the organism by coating it with something called nacre (the same substance that is on the inside of the oyster shell). This defense forms a pearl.
Isn’t that neat? I’m a trivia junkie, so things like this fascinate me.
Now that I’ve gotten you all excited about pearls, how about a great place to find exquisite pearl jewelry? The Pearl Outlet! Here you will find a great selection of high quality jewelry.
